Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
