In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
