Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now claimed the prestigious trophy on 14 separate occasions.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

However, Marseille fired twice late to take a surprise advantage. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to complete a convincing penalty win.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen years.
