Defense Department Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released in the coming days.
