A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
